As CFLs are used more, I expect that our recycling blue box garbage
pickup, that already take much plastic and glass will expand their take
to include CFLs as well, so they can be recycled. CFLs are really only
an intrim step as LED based lighting is likely to become affordable in a
few years. LED lighting reduces the power consumption by about 90% from
incandescent for a par 38 spotlight. Since we live in an area with a
lot of street people I have a couple of motion controlled spot lights
and have been tracking once a year, as the price drops for led spots
with an eye to switching when the price becomes more reasonable.

Crank powered led flashlights now run for about 5 minutes before needing
more turns on the crank and they eliminate batteries altogether. While
I am not sure how robust they are, I have used one everyday for about 4
months and the price was very reasonable.
